FLYTRAP

“BRING THE FUNK: A Funk-raiser”

Flytrap are ready to launch a new album!!

And ‘the fly’ needs your help…to fly!!

This will be Flytrap’s second full length album, a new and ambitious recording, “Revenge and the Urge to Fly”. It is currently in a stage of near completion and soon it will be unleashed for the world to hear.

Flytrap is the brainchild of I, the fly (Marvin Kee). The Flytrap sound is a cunning combination of soul, neo-soul, jazz, acid jazz, old school rap, all laid on a bed of groove, garnished with a dash of metal and a fistfull of punk funk. ‘the fly’, a seventies child, has drawn from the world of ‘blaxploitation’, erotica cinema, Bond films, and kung fu flicks, seamlessly fused to create a new and unique brand of Funk. These manic rhythms and sonic scapes are a blend of bombastic bass, funky wah, vintage Moogs, sparkling brass, a soulful Rhodes and trimmed with chunky guitar. Need we say more?

And very soon, my ensemble, Flytrap, a 7-piece groove machine will be touring, delivering these sounds directly to u! And yes, we are, we’re gonna start a BUZZ.

I acknowledge the fact that, yes, there are still a few funk bands that exist today and are touring around the world (eg. Prince, George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars, Erykah Badu, Daft Punk, Dam Funk). I just sometimes feel that, now, ‘funk’ as a genre in both the pop music industry and independent circuit, through time, has been left behind in the dust. As a musician and a music enthusiast my whole life, I have witness the changes and trends of the music industry and I gotta say it, funk is defunct. Today, an unsigned indie artist can apply for a music grant, and ‘funk’ isn’t even a genre to check off the list anymore. And when I say funk, i’m not talking about a funk record being spun, or a hiphop track sampling an old rare funk track…i’m talking about a ‘live funk band’ composing original material. There are unsigned funk bands out there playing their hearts out in the name of the funk. I would like to see these bands surface and thrive in the music industry and be heard, around the globe…and that includes Flytrap.

The mission of Flytrap is to finish the new album, to create a buzz and to raise awareness that funk prevails as a music genre and to bring the Funk to the forefront.

The new Flytrap album is almost finished. We just need your help to cross the finish line, to finance what is needed to get this album heard and to get Flytrap on the road to wave the Funk flag and spread the message of love and unity around the world. Some would say that this was a delusional concept and that it was an impossible feat but I personally believe that all missions impossible are possible.

The money raised for this campaign will go towards:

1) Finishing the album – The album is almost done people, we’re in mix mode!

2) Mastering- We want this to sound slick, tight and pristine…for your earholes.

3) Manufacture – Download, yes, but we want u to hold it in yer hands too, a cd.

4) Website – We are going to connect, u will see things, hear things and be in the loop.

5) Marketing – Let’s spread the word to the herd…letz start a BUZZ.

6) Music Video – U can hear the song, let us show u what it looks like.

7) Merchandise – T-shirts, hoodies, posters and stickers are fun stuff.

8) Comic Book – We are creating a funk world…for your mind.

9) Touring – We want to blow your minds with our music…in person.

THE COMIC

The comic book is in the works! It features the stunning artwork of genius B.Armstrong out of Montreal. The ‘fly’ character conquers evil in Badvibetopolis…with the power of the funk. Will he prevail?

THE VIDEO

‘the fly’ will be creating a music video for the song “They” off of the new album. The song features the silky smooth soulful voice of Joanna Borromeo.
The idea has already spawned. A very dark vid but hey itz balanced out with some serious vibrant and colorful animation. Here, might as well take a glimpse at the storyboard we devised courtesy of my pal Eric Dawson.

So come on people, lets BRING THE FUNK!!

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD TO THE HERD, SPAM YOUR FRIENDS, PLEASE TWEET ABOUT FLYTRAP, LINK THIS TO YOUR FACEBOOK WALL, TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT IT WHEREVER YOU ARE, IN THE PUB, ON THE BUS, WHILE YER IN CHURCH OR EVEN ON A ROLLERCOASTER RIDE….RUN THROUGH THE STREETS, SCREAMING LIKE A BANSHEE “BRING THE FUNK!!”.

MAKE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE PROMO/DOCUMENTARY ABOVE…AND SEND IT TO EVERYONE THAT U KNOW AND TELL THEM TO PLEDGE CUZ U DID.

THE FUNK CAN ONLY MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE. IT CAN GET PEOPLE TO NOT ONLY SHAKE THEIR RUMPS BUT BRING PEOPLE OF ALL KINDS TOGETHER IN A ROOM AND JUST ALL GET ALONG. I KNOW THIS, I’VE SEEN IT.

– the fly

As my team and I were devising this Funk-raiser, my home island of Cebu in the Philippines was hit hard with an earthquake, only to be followed by typhoon Haiyan in the vicinity, in Tacloban. This really hit home for us so we had decided that we will donate 15% of all funds raised in this campaign towards disaster relief in the Philippines. And if we reach our fundraising goal, we will donate 20%.

“We had the pleasure to have Marvin Kee (‘the fly’) as a participant of Momentum’s business plan program (2011). His energetic spirit made him to successfully complete and submit a sound business plan which did allow him  to access a business microloan.

I personally feel great admiration for the level of commitment he has placed in making his music business a success not only in terms of managing the business itself but to see the social engagement he has with the community as an active music performer in community association events, we even had the privilege to have him perform for two consecutive years at Momentum’s Open House events for the delight of our visitors.”

– Sergio Ribera (Microloans Facilitator at Momentum)

Marvin Kee (‘the fly’) is an Alberta musician whom I have known for over 15 years.  Throughout this time, I have felt that he is by far one of the most stylized and accomplished artist in the Calgary area and as such, I have invested in this project.  His talent and credentials are impeccable and warrant such calculated investment.”

– Dan Harmsen (Barclay St Real Estate)
